From now until May 31, 2010 I am running a discount sale on the sports digital downloads. For every 5 digital downloads purchased, save an additional 10% up to a maximum of 50% off the downloads. The savings are instant, so you will see the discounted price in your cart when you’ve added enough to qualify. Here’s how it works. Add any 5 downloads from the sports section and the entire order of downloads will be discounted 10%. At 10 downloads, the instant discount goes up to 20%. At 15 downloads, the download discount will be 30%. At 20 downloads, you’ll be saving 40% on those downloads. Finally at 25 downloads or more, the instant discount peaks at 50%.

Here’s the savings for personal download (most common):
5-9 digital downloads: 10% savings (Save up to $9)
10-14 digital downloads: 20% savings (Save up to $28)
15-19 digital downloads: 30% savings (Save up to $57)
20-24 digital downloads: 40% savings (Save up to $96)
25+ digital downloads: 50% savings (Savings start at $125)

FAQ:

Q: What’s the difference between a personal use download and an editorial download? Also which should I get?
A: While the license agreement describes each, here’s the basic difference. An editorial license will allow you to do everything you can do with a personal use license as well as use the image in an editorial manor. So what do you mean “editorial manor”? The most common usage a parent/athlete/booster will have for an editorial photo would be if the photo is to be used on a website that promotes the student athlete to recruiters. Most will be fine purchasing the personal use license. If you purchase an image for personal use and then later decide you need an editorial license, you can contact me and I will issue a credit after the editorial license is purchased.

Q: I ordered a digital download, but I can’t seem to download it. What is going on?
A: The actual file does not reside on the web store until after the order is placed. When an order is placed, I get a notification to upload the required files for the appropriate product types. Once a digital product is uploaded, the system will send you an email on the location of the file download. I strive to get these uploaded as fast as possible. If an order comes that will take more than 48 hours for me to fulfill, I will notify you as soon as I can.

Q: What is the resolution of your digital downloads?
A: Unfortunately, that is a question that has no set answer. Due to the different cameras I use and the amount of cropping that may have been done to thumbnail you see in the store, there is no set resolution that I guarantee. Most all can be used to print a standard 8×10.

During 2008 a couple of my friends were taking classes and mentioned it to me. I love photography and it sounded fun, so I signed up for a few classes. Before I knew it, I had completed the program in a little over 10 months. One of the first classes a student will take is Fundamentals of Digital Photography I. It’s really targeted towards folks that may have just gotten their first SLR and want to learn how to use it or folks that have decided that they want to really understand what they are doing with their camera.
From time to time, I will help out by serving as an adviser on the field trips, especially if it’s a nice day. The instructor shoots Nikon, so he can get a little lost when it comes to Canon cameras. The weather was really nice on Saturday, though it was a little colder than i thought it was going to be. The above photo is a panorama I stitched together to give you an idea of just how many students are in this class. The instructor and two other advisers are in the photo but the rest are all students. Sometimes the students are very shy and don’t ask any questions, though I know they have them. Other times they have questions galore. When I’m serving as an adviser, I usually don’t shoot much. When I shoot, it’s usually to demonstrate the technique or documentary as the photo above. Getting a great photo isn’t my priority. Getting proper exposure is always a priority. Secondary is getting a good composition. With those caveats in mind, below is a few images from the walk.

Last year one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to take at least one photo every day during 2009. I was successful in doing that but never seemed to get around to blogging. This year I want to blog more but really, I was blogging over at my Photo-A-Day site practically daily. I’ve decided in the long run that I don’t really want to maintain that site and it’s separate software, so I wanted to migrate it over here. It was running PixelPost. PixelPost really does work nicely for posting a single photo at a time, but really doesn’t compare to WordPress, the software I’m running here. Unfortunately exporting from PixelPost to WordPress wasn’t very straight forward. I found a script at PerfectedPerspectives.com that at least got the posts and comments exported.

You also may have noticed that the design has changed a bit. I started this blog out using the original Professional Photographers Theme aka ProPhoto. I then become a beta test for version 2 and switched to it. A few months ago I was invited back to beta test ProPhoto3. Unfortunately I got very busy and didn’t have time to really look at it much. Man, is this theme awesome! There are so many features that I haven’t even started using yet. If your looking for a high quality theme, I highly recommend using ProPhoto. Here’s a discount code you can use to save $10 off a new installation: JACUFF2232.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be updating with some of my sports posts, since that is what a lot of my recent work as been. A few people have asked how I sell those images. The company I use is called ExposureManager. They offer a lot of unique products such as Topps trading cards that make them the ideal company for a Sports Shooter. They have their own professional lab which is top quality and they offer a lot of products which will appeal to the portrait and wedding photographer as well. Also on my agenda is to get it better integrated with my blog here and my website at www.justinacuff.com.

That is why this post will be about April and May.

During the last few days I was in Brazil, I spent in Recife. There is a really old area near Recife called Olinda that I was interested in seeing. This is the Church of Saint Benedict in Olinda. One of the things I really loved about my stay in Brazil was how well the sky polarized when using a circular polarizer. The sun is really high in the sky most of the day, so it is also easier to get a polarized sky.

One of the subjects that is more challenging for me is flowers. It’s mainly because I get the feeling that it has all been done before. So when I do shoot flowers, there are some very specific criteria it has to meet. How are the colors? Is there another interesting subject? Can this make for an interesting composition? Actually, I’ll consider those with most every shot, but it’s more strict with flowers. For this, I headed to the UT Gardens while the tulips where in bloom. I saw the red tulip in a flowerbed of yellow tulips so I had color and an interesting composition.

For the water fountain shot, I knew that I wanted to do some night shoots of it at World’s Fair Park during what is commonly called the blue hour. The blue hour a time after sunset (and before sunrise) where the sky turns into a deep blue. Another interesting thing that I did not know about this fountain, was that at 30 minutes before they turn the fountain off, it runs through a program complete with music.

This shot at Norris Dam was really neat to get. I had heard that TVA was opening the spillways on several of their dams in the system. Having previously photographed sunrises and sunsets at Norris Dam, I knew the sunrise would make for a good shot. The spillway running makes it even better. I used a graduated neutral density filter to hold back the sky allowing it to go into that deep orange and red but not darken the dam.

This photo was taken while I was waiting for the sunrise on the riverwalk. It provided an interesting composition with the placement of the great blue heron and the arches in the bridge. I got some really good sunrise shots, but being a photo-a-day, I knew I could go back and get a sunrise shot another day, this shot I may not be able to get again.

After work I decided I would go walk around downtown Knoxville/Market Sqaure with only a 50mm lens to see what I could capture. I thought this sign was kind of amusing, so I took a photo of it and processed it using another Lomo action I found.

The East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in World’s Fair Park is kind of a recent addition. I wanted to go just after sunset, during “the blue hour”. I shot it with a 16mm lens. I love how the colors turned out, but still think this shot would benefit greatly by using the 17mm Tilt-Shift lens.

Sticking with a veterans theme, I decided to shoot the replica of the War Dog Memorial (original in Guam)

One of the things you have to do if you are ever in Natal, Brazil is ride the buggies. The dunes of Natal are simply amazing. In the end, I liked this image the best. It is at a zip line place called Aero Bunda.

Jesse and Juliana’s wedding was a lot of fun… apparently the flower girl thought so too. Too much dancing and too much drink and she was passed out on the floor.

This was taken with my Powershot G9 with my underwater case. I meet up with some friends that were staying at a Pousada. Some of the missionary kids came along as well. It didn’t take many shots to get what I wanted. I prefocused on the area I knew I wanted the capture and anticipated when to shoot, bearing in mind that shutter lag on a P&S is longer than my SLR.
