Wow! What a crazy game this was. I got my assignment to cover this game on Tuesday.  The winner of this game would advance on in the regional tournament and it would mean the end of their season for the loser. Hardin Valley got on the score board first with a goal from Hayden Zelem. This score would also be the only score of the first half.  Bearden tied up the score just shortly after the second half started with a goal from Ben Ferguson. Bearden then took the lead after a goal from Andrew Sullivan. Hardin Valley got the 2-2 equalizer goal from Justin Haskell off a corner kick. The game then went into overtime.  The rules of overtime state that two periods of 10 minute each are played. If the score is still tied up at the end of those overtime periods, then two 5 minute sudden death periods are played.  If there is no score at the end of those, then it comes down to penalty kicks.  In the fourth minute of the second sudden death period, Bearden’s Connor McCarty scored thus eliminating Hardin Valley from the tournament.

Tuesday night I was assigned to cover the Bearden vs Catholic baseball game.  The winner of this game would go onto to face Maryville High School in a later game.  I was only assigned the first, so I only stayed for the first game.  The game started at 5:00.  I wasn’t able to get off work in time to cover the full game, but I was able to make it by the second inning.  The game ended with Bearden winning 5-2.  They would later beat Maryville and advanced on to play Farragut the next day.

Thursday night was a special throwback night at Farragut High School. I was assigned to cover both games in the double header.  The first game was Karns vs Bearden and the second game was Oak Ridge vs Farragut.  Popcorn, soft drinks, and hot dogs were only 50 cents. The teams all wore old-timey uniforms and used wooden bats.  This gave me one of my first opportunities to capture a broken bat at the high school level. During each of the games, there was also a silent auction to benefit the National Parkinson Foundation.  Karns won the first game 7-1.

Originally my plans for Saturday was to get in a couple of Rugby games. Lacrosse ended up taking longer that I thought it would, so I decided to just shoot the Bearden vs South Doyle game at 4:00.  A friend from church was wondering when I would shoot something of South Doyle’s (they are outside of my normal coverage area).  Since it was late afternoon, the lighting was really nice.  I was setup to shoot Bearden for the first half and South Doyle for the second half. Unfortunately, during the first half, most of the action took place on the other end of the field.  I think I counted 4 trys by South Doyle in the first half while Bearden had none. I didn’t see how many kicks were made. During the second half South Doyle had like 3 tries and Bearden 1.  South Doyle was really in control of the game and came away with the victory.

With the baseball game starting at 6:30, I left the softball game around 6:20.  I was confident I had what I needed anyways.  When I arrived at the baseball game, they had just finished the national anthem.  I went up to the press box to get the line-ups and then proceeded to shot the game.  Maryville got off to an early lead.  For the rest of the game, while I was there, Bearden would be playing catch-up.  The final score was 6-5 in Maryville’s favor. Since my assignment was to cover only Bearden, that is who I primarily covered.
