Wow! What a crazy game this was. I got my assignment to cover this game on Tuesday.  The winner of this game would advance on in the regional tournament and it would mean the end of their season for the loser. Hardin Valley got on the score board first with a goal from Hayden Zelem. This score would also be the only score of the first half.  Bearden tied up the score just shortly after the second half started with a goal from Ben Ferguson. Bearden then took the lead after a goal from Andrew Sullivan. Hardin Valley got the 2-2 equalizer goal from Justin Haskell off a corner kick. The game then went into overtime.  The rules of overtime state that two periods of 10 minute each are played. If the score is still tied up at the end of those overtime periods, then two 5 minute sudden death periods are played.  If there is no score at the end of those, then it comes down to penalty kicks.  In the fourth minute of the second sudden death period, Bearden’s Connor McCarty scored thus eliminating Hardin Valley from the tournament.

Wednesday I was assigned the West High School vs Farragut High School soccer g ame. Having not covered Farragut in soccer yet, I made the mistake of heading over to the High School to find the game.  I had expected it to be played at the football stadium… I was wrong.  I showed up and there was nothing going on at the football field.  I headed back to the car and went over to the middle school since there were lights on.  Turns out that is where the high school plays there games.

Farragut got on the scoreboard really quickly.  A penalty by West within the first minute lead to a penalty shot by Farragut.  West was able to score a goal, but in the end it was Farragut that came away with the 6-1 win.

Monday I was assigned to cover the Catholic vs CAK soccer game.  Although the weather seemed pretty good, I was warned that it may get postponed.  Just before I left, I looked at CAK’s website and did indeed see that the game had been postponed. The field must have been in pretty bad shape. The game was moved to Tuesday.  The game was quite a defensive game with neither goalie letting anything by them.  I kept waiting for a score, but then realized I probably should cover the defense more because that may be the story.  I got a really great shot of Catholic’s goalie going to deflect the ball away from the goal, but I was shooting pretty tight and it doesn’t include the ball, so it obviously didn’t make it to the paper.

I finally got my first chance to shoot a soccer game this spring.  Last Thursday I had been assigned to cover a softball game at Knoxville Catholic High School and then shoot the soccer game at KCHS as well afterwords.  Both of those games ended up getting called off because of rain.  Soccer has always been one of my favorite sports to play because of its nonstop nature. It’s nonstop nature also means that as a photographer you always have to be playing attention because you will miss the shot if you aren’t.

The weather was perfect on Tuesday night.  I was there to cover Catholic. I pretty much focused completely on Catholic because, well, they provided the most action.  It was a blowout on Catholic’s part.  Within the first few minutes of the game, Catholic had scored a couple of goals and that would be all they would need to get the victory.  I think I counted 7 goals on the night for Catholic.
