Thursday I was assigned to cover Webb School of Knoxville in their baseball game against Kingston High School.  It was senior night at Webb, so it started out with honoring the “Dandy Dozen”. Kingston got off to a quick start scoring 2 runs in the first inning. It wasn’t until the third inning that Webb was able to answer those runs tying it up.  In the fourth inning Webb captured the lead, but Kingston answered with a run in the fifth inning.  Webb broke the tie in the 6th inning which yielded the final score of Kingson 3 – 4 Webb. Webb’s Justin Alexander struck out 15 batters.

Monday I was assigned to cover the Catholic vs CAK soccer game.  Although the weather seemed pretty good, I was warned that it may get postponed.  Just before I left, I looked at CAK’s website and did indeed see that the game had been postponed. The field must have been in pretty bad shape. The game was moved to Tuesday.  The game was quite a defensive game with neither goalie letting anything by them.  I kept waiting for a score, but then realized I probably should cover the defense more because that may be the story.  I got a really great shot of Catholic’s goalie going to deflect the ball away from the goal, but I was shooting pretty tight and it doesn’t include the ball, so it obviously didn’t make it to the paper.

After shooting the South Doyle vs Farragut rugby match, I decided to stay for one more game.  This game was for the Conference Girls Cup Championship.  Both teams played real solid each half.  In the end though, it was Maryville coming away with the 13-10 victory over Karns.

Rugby seriously has to be one of the most hardcore sports there is.  It’s full contact and no pads or helmets.  I had gotten a call on Thursday specifically asking if I could come out to Farragut’s game against South Doyle on Saturday.  Rugby is a sport I love to photograph, but doesn’t usually fall as part of my assignments to cover.  I do wish I was able to make it out to a few more games from all the teams, but just couldn’t this seaon.  By covering this game, I at least was able to cover Bearden, Farragut, and South Doyle each twice this season.  The final score was South Doyle 15 – Farragut 10.  Afterwords, I stayed to shoot the Maryville vs Karns girls Rugby game.  Hopefully those images will be ready sometime tomorrow morning.

The nightcap game of the double header started at 7:30 and featured Oak Ridge vs Farragut High School.  I stayed late, but probably should have left earlier based on how low I had to let my shutter speed drop to get a decent exposure.  In between the games, I went to get a photo-op with the representatives from the Society of Friendly Fellows and National Parkinson Foundation that were holding the silent auctions during each of the games.  This photo-op wasn’t part of my assignment and the only lenses I had on me was my 70-200mm and 300mm, both of which weren’t near wide enough for the shot.  I usually always carry a point and shoot with me so I can snap photos of the lineup/stats book so I figured I’d get a group shot around some of the items up for auction with that camera.  I saw that it got published in Monday’s paper.

Thursday’s game was throwback night, which paid tribute to the history of baseball.  They wore ole-timey uniforms, refreshments were cheap, and they used wooden bats.  Congratulations to Ethan Bennett #11 for hitting a home run in 10 consecutive games.  This is a new national record for the high school level.  The 10th consecutive game was on Tuesday verses Knoxville Catholic.  He hit his 23rd home run of the season on Thursday night.  Nicky Delmonico also had a home run on Thursday night. Farragut plays their final regular season game tonight and then moves onto districts later this week.
